A pediatric dermatologist is a doctor who treats skin problems in babies, children, and teens. Kids’ skin is different from adults’, so it often needs special care. Pediatric dermatologists know how to diagnose and treat skin issues that are common in children.

What Kind of Training Do They Have?

Pediatric dermatologists go through extensive training. First, they become general dermatologists. Then, they complete extra training called fellowship to learn more about treating children’s skin. Many are board certified in pediatrics, which means they’ve had special training to care for children in general—not just their skin.

When Should You Take Your Child?

You should take your child or teen to a pediatric dermatologist if they have:

• Skin problems that won’t go away. This can include: acne, warts, etc.
• Unusual rashes or marks on their skin, such as eczema and psoriasis
• Skin issues that affect how they feel or live their life
• These specialists can help figure out what’s going on and find the best way to treat it.

Pediatric dermatologists usually treat patients from birth through age 21. If your child or teen is dealing with a skin condition, it’s a good idea to see a doctor who understands their unique needs.
